WHEN WE KNOW BETTER, WE MUST DO BETTER.

Learning the facts really changed my mindset. We must address overproduction, disposability, and exploitation of labor - the fact that people are throwing away 70 percent of their clothing in this country is frightening to me. Hope For Flowers embodies my hope for future generations and what I can do to contribute to a more positive social fabric. If we want a planet to pass on to our children and our children’s children, we each have to accept the responsibility of making certain that happens.

"I WAS LIKE, OK, I’M SMARTER THAN THIS. I HAVE TO USE MY INTELLIGENCE AND MY PASSION TO FIND A WAY TO BE A MORE POSITIVE FORCE IN THE INDUSTRY."

ON SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability, both in fashion and individual choices, inspired me to work more responsibly. I think we have this disposable attitude toward everything now. The more people understand what goes into making clothes —consumers and brands—we now have to walk back from wasteful exploitative practices. We have to educate consumers and elevate the craft of making clothing that lasts.

ON DETROIT

Community is so important to sustainability. I wanted to make sure that my being in Detroit and setting up my business there was going to include the community. I wanted to be a part of bringing arts education back to young people in Detroit, after the lows the city has suffered.

ON ACTIVISM

I never saw myself as an activist. But certain things have come up throughout my lifetime and career, and I’ve had the opportunity to do important work, and speak out, and share my voice. I think it’s important to advocate for causes that we believe in, especially if it’s something positive and uplifting.
